How has Renewable Energy impacts on the Protection Relays operation?

In the last webinar, we talked about how the market trend is making solar inverters bigger and bigger. As the power increases (up to 7.5MVA or higher), the voltages also increase.

The market is not only demanding overcurrent protections, but also full data logging and more complex control functions: relays with reclosing capability, advanced communications…

Depending on market practices, economic costs, and impact on grid stability there are different approaches to wind farm management.

With traditional relays, the management options are reduced, as any power system failure would imply either turbine shutdown or worse, an unprotected generation scenario.

🎓We will talk about this and much more.

Remote Communication in Self-Powered Relays?

The irruption of Smart Grids in MV distribution networks for automation and monitoring purposes implies the development of new solutions to address the changing requirements of the network.

The self-powering function becomes indispensable. The installations are not equipped with any external battery. The relay must have the ability to provide and maintain certain indications (alarms/interlocks) under conditions of power and communications failure.

Remote access to intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) can provide very useful data to #SCADA. Actual switchgear status or local alarms, Current measurements at the point of connection, and remote operation of the switchgear… All this information can be collected and sent to the SCADA by #ProtectionandControlrelay if connected to the communication network of the farm.

In case of faults, remote access to the event log and fault logs of the relay allows to clarify the reason and to decide if a remote shutdown order can be sent and continue producing power.
